How to Use Compost

1. Soil Improvement

  • Mix compost into garden beds before planting to enhance soil structure.

  • Spread a 1–2 inch layer over existing soil and mix it into the top few inches.

2. Mulching

  • Apply a 2–3 inch layer around plants to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.

  • Keep compost a few inches away from plant stems to prevent excessive moisture buildup.

3. Lawn Care

  • Spread a thin layer (¼–½ inch) over the lawn to improve soil condition.

  • Rake lightly to ensure even distribution.

4. Potted Plants

  • Mix compost with potting soil at a ratio of 1:3 for improved aeration and moisture retention.

  • Refresh container plants by adding a thin layer on top of the soil.

5. Tree & Shrub Care

  • Apply compost around the base of trees and shrubs, keeping it a few inches from the trunk.

  • Use as a top dressing to improve soil health around established plants.

Storage Instructions

  • Store compost in a covered bin or pile to prevent excessive moisture loss.

  • Keep in a well-ventilated area to maintain quality.

  • Avoid storing near standing water to prevent anaerobic conditions.

Best Practices

✅ Use compost when the soil is warm for best results.
✅ Apply in spring or fall for optimal soil conditioning.
✅ Combine with other organic matter if needed for specific soil needs.
❌ Do not use compost with visible contaminants.
❌ Avoid applying too thickly, as it may restrict airflow to plant roots.
